Nettlefold MAIN HALL closure
Due to the unfortunate theft of our copper roof we have been told to close the Main/upper Hall for the month of June. Work will commence in June for its complete replacement.
The following classes where they could not be accomodated in another part of the building include

Bubblegum, Soda & POP!
Hi everybody! Phoenix Players are putting a new show in just a few weeks! It's on Saturday the 16th of April and, so far, this is the only date you'll be able to see it... 
But there are two shows to watch: one at 2.30pm and another at 7pm. Some more information about the show: "Our next show is light-hearted revue of girl bands from the 50s, 60s & 70s that were the precursor to the Spice Girls and others. Bubblegum, Soda and Pop is an original piece written by David Armitt for the group and it takes the form of a musical revue with lots of your favourite pop songs from these decades. The show will be performed at Nettlefold Hall, West Norwood for one night only on Saturday 16th of April, though depending on demand we may add a second show. The casting for this show is now complete. Cast will reopen again in late April when we start preparing for our Summer show. If you'd like to be kept in touch about this, please go to our website to join our mailing list and find some more information." Another fabulous afternoon at the Nettlefold......happy Monday's
Please join us every Monday for our regular Sequence Dancing with Maurice at 11am - 1pm, just £2.00. This will be followed by our regular end of the month Classic `Free' Film Screening February 28th at 1.30pm. No need to book....just come along.....This month's screening is `A Place in the Sun', starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters.
A Place in the Sun is a 1951 American film which tells the story of a working-class young man who is entangled with two women; one who works in his wealthy uncle's factory and the other a beautiful socialite. George Eastman (Montgomery Clift), the poor nephew of rich industrialist Charles Eastman (Herbert Heyes), takes a job in his uncle's factory. Despite George's family relationship to the owner, the rich Eastman family treats him as an outsider and gives him the humblest job available in the factory and no entree into their exclusive social circle. George, uncomplaining, hopes to impress his uncle—whom he addresses as "Mr. Eastman"—with his hard work and earn his way up.
While working in the factory, George starts dating fellow factory worker Alice "Al" Tripp (Shelley Winters), in defiance of the workplace rules. Al is a poor and inexperienced girl who is dazzled by George and slow to believe that his Eastman name brings him no advantages.
While stepping out with Al, George meets "society girl" Angela Vickers, played by Elizabeth Taylor, and they quickly fall in love. Being Angela's escort thrusts George into the intoxicating and carefree lifestyle of high society that his rich Eastman kin had denied him. When Al announces that she is pregnant and makes it clear that she expects George to marry her, he temporizes, spending more and more of his time with Angela and his new well-heeled friends. An attempt to procure an abortion for Al fails, and Al renews her insistence on marriage. George is invited to join Angela at the Vickers's holiday lake house and excuses himself to Al, saying that the visit will advance his career and accrue to the benefit of the coming child.
George and Angela spend time at secluded Loon Lake, and after hearing a story of a couple's supposed drowning there, with the man's body never being found, George hatches a plan to rid himself of Al so that he can marry Angela. Tradegy follows.......you will have to come and see what happens if you don't already know......
The film was directed by George Stevens and was a critical and commercial success, winning six Academy Awards.

Ma Kelly Goes to the Games looks at healthy living and the fun that can be had making new friends and getting fit and active!
An entertaining show with a serious message about fitness, health and independent living for the 50s - 70s and the misconceptions all generations have about each other. Our aim with the show is to encourage the take up of physical activities and we want to work with partnership organisations who have the same objectives.
Ma Kelly is happy avoiding her responsibilities towards her boisterous step-grandchildren and living an easy life; after all, she needn't get out of her chair...but it's also quite lonely...until a young neighbour, Sakara turns up needing her help, and daughter Joan drops by and she's in tears, she's only fifty and the bus driver asked her for her bus pass!
The Three decide to unite on a mission to be fitter and healthier. It doesn't sound much fun to Ma Kelly, but the results are hilarious and she ends up going to the Games!
Interwoven with songs, and a dance or two, you may find yourself wanting to join them...
Plus tea and biscuits and the chance to have a go yourself to the strains of the music from the sixties.

Zumba Classes starting!

Starting from next week a new class at The Nettlefold.
It's a ZUMBA class, and it's active, energetic and fun! The dance routines are easy and engaging and the music is latin based.
Classes are 1h long, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm, every wednesday EXCEPT every 4th wednesday of the month.
If you are interested simply turn up on the day and speak to our ZUMBA teacher, Kathy Yvanovich.

On the 13th of November the Lewisham Black Fathers' Support Group comes to pay us a visit once again bringing with them a host of amazing performers:

"The Lewisham Way Youth & Community Centre is a voluntary project and a registered charity, established in the London Borough of Lewisham in 1973. The Centre is a well known and respected organisation that provides valuable services for the local community, especially for children and young people living in the borough. The Black Fathers' Support Group, established in May 2009, currently provides the salary for one teacher and has supplied uniforms forthe students at the Princess Diana of Wales School in Kololu, The Gambia, West Africa. The Black Fathers' Support Group is in the process of building our own school in Kololi, The Gambia, West Africa and this is our second fundraising event."

As you probably know by now, we're going to have independent film festival here at the Nettlefold on Saturday the 2nd of October.
And not only will we be showing shorts from young black directors (and a feature length film by Wayne Saunders himself) but we're also holding a friendly competition called MAKE A FILM IN A DAY.

This play looks at the achievement and life of William Cuffay. In 1839, William Cuffay, the son of a former slave joined the Metropolitan Tailors' Charter Association. He became an important figure in the Chartist movement in London, the first mass popular political movement in Britain, and was transported to Australia for allegedly planning an uprising against the British government.

Magnetic Me!...and thinking your way to happiness.
We have a fabulous show coming to the Nettlefold Saturday 17th July at 7pm, and Sunday 18th July at 2pm and 5pm.
The most exciting stage show in London
Adapted by the Young & Talented group from the book `Magnetic Me'. Author Carine Wayne-Campbell
The Project:
Using the stimulus of Magnetic-Me!, the Young & Talented performing arts group devised their own play incorporating song and dance.The play was then scripted and will be performed to community and school audiences at the Nettlefold Hall Theatre in July. The aim of the project is to work with and through young people to breakdown destructive thought processes that keep them from reaching their full potential.
Whilst staging musicals is nothing new for performing arts schools, the innovation lies in the fact that the children, some of life’s best teachers, have taken the lead in every aspect of the show which, thanks to ‘Awards for All’, will have the look and feel of a fringe West End Show.
With the focus on the true meaning of the word ‘educate’ from the Latin ‘e-ducere’ meaning ‘to lead out’ - the Magnetic Me! show, whilst supporting the PSHE curriculum and embracing ‘Every Child Matters’, is all about effective learning by drawing out what is already within the students.

CORY DOCTOROW TALK - Readers And Writers Festival, 8th May 2010, 7pm

Tentatively titled Future-Proof: The Time-Hacks and Life-Mods of Cory Doctorow, this talk, more than confuse your brain will take you through the wonders of one of the most ecletic writers of our time.

He will be here talking about his life, his work (his latest book - check out the pic below), digital rights and the future of the future. It's going to be a fun, provocative and insightful look into storytelling and technology.
This is your chance to meet this warm and clever writer, truly the voice of a new generation.
Cory is a pioneer of Creative Commons Licensing, making much of his work readily available for download for FREE on the internet.
In 2007, Entertainment Weekly called him, "The William Gibson of his generation." He was also named one of Forbes Magazine's 2007/8/9/10 Web Celebrities, and one of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders for 2007.
