Childrens Theatre production at Nettlefold on the 17th and 18th July 2010

Magnetic Me!...and thinking your way to happiness.

We have a fabulous show coming to the Nettlefold Saturday 17th July at 7pm, and Sunday 18th July at 2pm and 5pm.

The most exciting stage show in London

Adapted by the Young & Talented group from the book
`Magnetic Me'. Author Carine Wayne-Campbell

The Project:
Using the stimulus of Magnetic-Me!, the Young & Talented performing arts group devised their own play incorporating song and dance. The play was then scripted and will be performed to community and school audiences at the Nettlefold Hall Theatre in July. The aim of the project is to work with and through young people to breakdown destructive thought processes that keep them from reaching their full potential.

Whilst staging musicals is nothing new for performing arts schools, the innovation lies in the fact that the children, some of life’s best teachers, have taken the lead in every aspect of the show which, thanks to ‘Awards for All’, will have the look and feel of a fringe West End Show.

With the focus on the true meaning of the word ‘educate’ from the Latin ‘e-ducere’ meaning ‘to lead out’ - the Magnetic Me! show, whilst supporting the PSHE curriculum and embracing ‘Every Child Matters’, is all about effective learning by drawing out what is already within the students.

Tickets
£4 adults
£2 under 16's
Free for under 5's and OAP

For Tickets call
020 8556 5348 or 07890 017685
or visit http://www.magneticme.com/ or http://www.youngandtalented.co.uk/

The book will be on sale at the subsidised rate thanks to Awards for ALL.

Free book signing by the author

Do come along...it will be worth it!

CORY DOCTOROW TALK - Readers And Writers Festival, 8th May 2010, 7pm

Hi!

It is indeed my great pleasure to let you all know that we are going to have Cory Doctorow joining us for a chat about his life and his work on Saturday the 8th of May 2010 at 7pm.
This is where you can find us:
The Nettlefold Hall (click for MAP)
1-5 Norwood High Street
West Norwood
London
SE27 9JX

Tentatively titled Future-Proof: The Time-Hacks and Life-Mods of Cory Doctorow, this talk, more than confuse your brain will take you through the wonders of one of the most ecletic writers of our time.
"Cory will be modding your reality at the mere price of your presence! Join him for tales of woe and wonder that will explore the realms of storytelling as techno-social activism; delving into creativity as symbiotic, crosscultural hacking; breaching the dangers and shelters of reason; examining the copy-wrongs of copy-right; transducing pathways to a post-scarcity world while pondering if truth is truly in sight? Be there and glimpse the future, right now…"
What it means: a witty and informative Q&A with an unusual author about some - perhaps - unusual themes...

Cory Doctorow (craphound.com) a science fiction author, activist, journalist and blogger -- the co-editor of Boing Boing (boingboing.net) and the author of the bestselling Tor Teens/HarperCollins UK novel LITTLE BROTHER. He is the former European director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto, Canada, he now lives in London.

(photo by Joi Ito, Creative Commons Attribution 3.0)

He will be here talking about his life, his work (his latest book - check out the pic below), digital rights and the future of the future. It's going to be a fun, provocative and insightful look into storytelling and technology.
Entry is FREE but we have a limited number of seats... so please book in advance!
phone: 020 7926 1075

This is your chance to meet this warm and clever writer, truly the voice of a new generation.

Cory is a pioneer of Creative Commons Licensing, making much of his work readily available for download for FREE on the internet.
(if you'd like to check out some of Cory's stuff I'd say click on OVERCLOCKED.)
(or LITTLE BROTHER... come on, you know you're curious...)

In 2007, Entertainment Weekly called him, "The William Gibson of his generation." He was also named one of Forbes Magazine's 2007/8/9/10 Web Celebrities, and one of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders for 2007.

Here's a bit I hacked from Cory's blog about his new novel FOR THE WIN:

'My next YA novel, For the Win, comes out in less than a month on May 11, and the early reviews have begun to show up. I'm especially delighted to have gotten my first-ever starred review in Booklist, which reads, in part, "Doctorow is indispensable. It’s hard to imagine any other author taking on youth and technology with such passion, intelligence, and understanding...Once again Doctorow has taken denigrated youth behavior (this time, gaming) and recast it into something heroic... With its eye-opening humanity and revolutionary zeal, this ambitious epic is well worth the considerable challenge." '

For more information please check Cory's blog.

Or his Wikipedia page.

Phoenix Players and Snowy White

I missed it but I heard so many good things about it that I decided there and then to do a post about it!

Kindly, Justine Knight sent me some pics that I'll treat you to. And you'll either recognise them (if you were one of the lucky ones to watch the show...) or you won't recognise them and, in that case, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone and that you'll be able to watch their next show - HALF A SIXPENCE from the 9th to the 11th of September 2010.
Also here at the Nettlefold.

It's easy to know when there was a good show.
People tell you about it.
And they tell you with enthusiasm.
And when EVERYBODY keeps mentioning how good it was, well... that's when you're happy to have been part of the process of making it happen (however little...)

Bringing someone new onboard is always a strange process. There are needs to be met, expectations on both sides, things to learn, things to share. I guess there's always a little bit of anxiety since neither knows what they can really count on.

If things go well, if trust is placed and met on both sides then we can only but look at the future in a positive light.

Personally I'd like to see more community stuff happening in the Nettlefold. We have our fair share already (and not much more available space left...) but it's always nice when we can accomodate something so actively targeted at the local community as the Phoenix Players.

If you are curious and want to know a bit more about them (or join!) just click on the link for Phoenix Players. You'll have plenty of information (and more pictures!) about their ongoing activities, past and upcoming shows.

And, if you have Facebook, just search Phoenix Players - Drama.

So, big thanks to Justine Knight and Debbie Featherstone for liaising with us and putting on such a great show!

Thanks to Mark that designed the lighting for that play and that held the fort while I was away.

Thanks to Joanne that did all those extra hours so that the show could go on.

And thanks to Phoenix Players for being kind and professional and thoroughly having and sharing fun with all of us.
We look forward seeing you again!

The show starts at 2pm on the 6th of March 2010 and will run for about an hour.

We're very happy to have Krazy Kat Theatre Company back with us!

"Whilst doing battle with her laundry, Goldilocks decides to set off for an adventure in the woods.
Little does she realise that by the end of the day she will have met so many bears… But how many bears are there, and where are they all going?
Join Kinny Gardner in a highly diverting look at the old favourite with Krazy
Kat’s unpredictable mix of silly puppets, even sillier singing and lots of Sign Language."
