Fast Approaching BHM 2010

Hi everybody!


October is almost here and, as usual, we're going to have quite a handful of FREE events for you to come watch and enjoy!


Because this year's organization was somewhat different from previous years, it's been hard to gather the info about all the events we will be hosting throughout Lambeth. However, as soon as I manage to get hold of everything I will post it here for your convenience!


But here's a brief idea of some of the things you'll be able to see here at The Nettlefold:

Presented by young multi talented Award Winning Filmmaker Wayne G Saunders this historical event will showcase some of the greatest, innovative and pioneering movies of our generation.
On the night entertainment will include music, food, drinks, film merchandise, photography and an inspirational talk for the next generation of promising filmmakers.

Youth led theatre production of Caribbean and African Heritage. Uses time travel to explore History.

FILM SCREENING
A SON OF AFRICA (Oluadah Equiano) & GOODBYE BAFANA (Nelson Mandela)
7pm
Two films about two key figures in history that raised the consciousness of humanity by looking at the shame of both slavery and Apartheid.


October 30th
FILM SCREENING
THE DHAMMA BROTHERS
7pm to 10pm
THE DHAMMA BROTHERS tells a dramatic tale of human potential and transformation as it closely follows and documents the stories of the prison inmates at Donaldson Correction Facility who enter into this arduous and intensive program. This film, with the power to dismantle stereotypes about men behind prison bars also, in the words of Sister Helen Prejean (Dead ManWalking), “gives you hope for the human race."

BHM Events - Week Four

Hi everybody and welcome to our fourth week of BHM Events!

This week we're going to have plenty of theatre to watch, also a fim screening and, of course, the ongoing Lambeth Quilt project!

African Diaspora

Cross generational show suitable for all the family and don't forget to invite Grandparents too. African Diaspora is a youth led theatre production, helping young people from African and Caribbean Heritage explore image, identity and community cohesion in the 21st Century. Using time travel to explore history, and including music, dance and comedy, this show engages young
people from the outset and leaves them enriched and more knowledgeable. This production is currently funded by the charity A Glimmer of Hope and is touring London secondary schools, colleges, youth groups and theatres.

The Lambeth Quilt – Our Quilt

Lambeth Libraries and Lambeth Arts will be hosting a series of intergenerational workshops in October to create a reminiscence quilt that reflects and records the diversity and history of Lambeth.
Sessions will take place on Saturdays through October starting Saturday 3rd October, 1 – 3pm Nettlefold Lower Hall

"The Leopard and The Drum" - A family showsuitable for nursery, reception and primary aged children.

Osebo the Leopard had the biggest and loudest drum in the whole of the rain forest. He was the envy of all the other animals but the only problem was that he wouldn’t let anyone have a go on his drum, not even Nyame the sky god. Who will bring Nyame the Sky God Osebo’s big and loud drum? Will it be the elephant, monkey, snake or tortoise? A traditional Ashante tale brought to life through inter-active music, drama and dance.

Celebrating Age Festival - The Last Week

Hi everybody!

We hope you have been enjoying all the events so far!

Celebrating Age Festival - The First Week

Hi everybody!

Keeping in tune with the tradition of IOctober being our busiest month of the year, we are proud to be hosts to yet another great score of events for this year's Celebrating Age Festival!

Two events on this second week of october (though it's the first of the festival for us...). The screening of Breakfast At Tiffany's and the return of Dizzy duet of Richard and Polly.

“BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS”
With Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard and Mickey Rooney. A true classic, based on Truman Capote's book. 1961 Oscar for the song “Moon River”.

Synopsis
Struggling writer Paul Varjak moves into a New York apartment building and becomes intrigued by his pretty, quirky neighbor Holly Golightly. Holly's lifestyle confuses and fascinates Paul; in public she flits through parties with a sexy, sophisticated air, but when they're alone she changes into a sweetly vulnerable bundle of neuroses.

BHM Events - Week Two

Hello everybody!

Welcome to week two of our wonderful Black History Month!

This week will mainly focus on film with the screening of ‘Groove Roots’ and ‘House Of Sugar’ on friday and "People, Signs and Resistance In Brixton from the late 50s to the present day".
Both screenings are free so make sure you grab a seat before they run out!

Also, don't forget to join the weekly Quilt Project in which the fabric of history gets woven with the threads of reminiscence.

Travelling Films: ‘Groove Roots’ & ‘House Of Sugar’
7pm Nettlefold Hall
‘Groove Roots’ is a documentary produced by the Octavia Foundation which works to support local communities in Central and West London. It traces the evolution of Ladbroke Grove from the 1958 race riots to the present day and includes the historical development of the Nottinghill Carnival.

‘House of Sugar’ contemplates upon the opulent lifestyle of the slave-owning planters in Jamaica. 17th and 18th century antiques discovered on the island provide clues to their riches and offer further insight onto the periods examined.

Lambeth Libraries and Archives invites you to join us for the official launch of Black HistoryMonth 2009. The evening will be a celebration of Black literature and arts, and will include performances from Lady S, a popular and well established poet, and presents on
Nomad Radio. Also appearing on the night will be Churchboyz, a gospel tribute band. Seeing them perform live is to witness a slice of black British history in action because the band serves as a reminder of the great musical heritage of Black Britons. This is an invitation only event with

A Charmed Life

Film Showing with Introduction by Patrick Vernon

Friday 8 May 2009, 7pm @ The Nettlefold Hall


A documentary film charting the life of Eddie Martin Noble (1917-2007), it examines personal historical perspectives on issues around colonisation of the Caribbean and racial inequality in post-war Britain.

The film raises issues of the legacy of the Windrush Generation in Britain as Eddie, a RAF Pilot, comes to terms with a post war reality.

In this fascinating film, the story of Eddie Noble becomes a story for us all and inspired the book Small Island by Andrea Levy.
